Swindon Flames - BiSHA SW Youth Champions 2003

Congratulations to Swindon Flames on becoming

Bisha SW Youth League champions.

Success rested on the last game of the season against Bath Tigers - winner takes all.  In a thrilling game the Flames team narrowly claimed victory. The first half was dominated by Swindon but they were unable to score and suffered a setback just before half time when Bath scored against the run of play.  Swindon came back early in the second half with a goal but, needing to win to claim the championship, were still being frustrated by the Bath goalie.

With 8 minutes left, Swindon changed their lines to put more strength in attack. This paid off and Bath were unable to stop Sean Davies and Phil Hodge scoring to put Swindon top of the table with a 3-1 win.

"Bath are a good side" said Flames captain Phil Hodge.  "They beat us earlier in the season when we had players away - so this was a good victory."   Both Swindon and Bath now go through to the National Championships in Torquay this November.

Swindon also claimed the 'Fair Play Trophy' for the lowest number of penalties in the season which was a major achievement when combined with the Championship trophy. "We value this recognition of the 'hard but fair' ethos that we have built in the Club", said Manager Phil Costigan, "and I am very proud of the lads. If you take a lot of penalties, putting players in the sin bin, the remaining players on pitch become tired and are at a disadvantage."

Phil Hodge was also honoured by being selected for the league's dream team as one of the best defenders.

Swindon Skater Hockey Club remain the most successful club in the South West and the only one to send teams to the Nationals in all age groups.  The PeeWee (U12) won their league without conceding a game and the Juniors (U18) came second to Chippenham Vikings. Swindon Flames Youth side has previously enjoyed great success, finishing second in the Great Britain championships two years ago and taking the silver medal in the European Championships last year.

The club is currently looking for more players, particularly in the 7 - 11 years age group for next season.  - Most of the players from the Flames Youth team started in the youngest age group and have worked their way through the different teams. If anyone would like to try skater hockey, then the Swindon club runs introductory training sessions at The Croft Sports Centre, Old Town on Saturdays at 1pm.  The club will provide sticks and helmets, but players will need to bring their own skates, Swindon Skater Hockey Club is open to all age groups.
