![]() Peewee 2005 Match Reports
Swindon Flames v Oxford Storm – Sunday 6th March 2005
Having been expecting a week off from league action, the Peewees found themselves being asked to bring forward their crunch encounter with the early league pacesetters.
Before the start things looked ominous as the Oxford side appeared to have more depth and were physically bigger than the Flames almost to a man. However, the Flames were not at all intimidated and by sticking to their game plan to move the ball around and pass, pass and pass again, ran out convincing 10-6 winners.
Flames got off to a great start with a neatly tucked away goal from Jamie Morgan after only 1.18. A minute later the passing plan reaped further benefit when a sweet move from Joe Rackham to Olly Thomson found Jamie Morgan all alone in front of the net and although his initial shot was well saved, he doubled both his and the team’s score off the rebound. Connor MacKenzie collected a harsh two minute penalty at 8.19, but the Flames held off heavy Storm pressure whilst shorthanded with great work from goalie Adam Rose and youngster Ryan Walters playing as the only out and out defenceman throughout the duration of the penalty. It was inevitable that such pressure would eventually result in a Storm goal and no sooner had the penalty expired than the score quickly became 2-1. Until this point leading scorer Danny Williams had been having a quiet game, but he soon came to life scoring a hat-trick in less than five minutes – the first a shot high to the stick side from a great pass on the left by Joe Rackham, the second a wraparound after the Storm goalie lost control, and the third, by far his best, a mazy solo end to end run the length of the pitch. Storm had punctuated this goal blitz at 15.57 and completed the period scoring at 18.38 when the tired Flames defenders were unable to effect a line change, but the Flames went into the break clearly delighted to be holding a 5-3 lead.
Jamie Morgan started the second period as he had the first scoring a great breakaway goal direct from the restart face-off to complete his hat-trick and despite conceding a Storm goal with Adam Rose unsighted at 20.57, Jamie Morgan’s fourth at 21.52 and the pick of the bunch at 22.30 from Danny Williams, converting his own shot as it came back off the post following a slick passing move involving Jamie Morgan and Connor MacKenzie, Flames now held a commanding 8-4 lead. Storm pulled one back at 29.46 before Flames killed the game with strikes from Jamie Morgan, benefiting from a superb pass from an acute angle from Danny Williams at 34.20 and Danny Williams latching on to a great clearance from Olly Thompson before beating the goalie through the five-hole at 36.40. Leading 10-5 Flames shut up shop with their first line defencemen receiving solid support from young Sam Nobbs whilst short-handed as Danny Williams served a two minute penalty before Storm took scant consolation from completing the scoring on the powerplay at 39.09.
Managers Ian Morgan and Derek Thompson were ecstatic with this great win and especially with the manner in which it was achieved reflecting the hard work undertaken in their training sessions, the perfect execution of a more pass orientated gameplan and their decision to mix up the lines.
The Peewees next game is a friendly match against Gloucester Boxers at the Croft on Saturday 12th March at 3.00, returning to league action against Banbury Bulldogs on 3rd April at 1.20.
Scorers – Danny Williams 5+2, Jamie Morgan 5+1, Olly Thompson 0+1, Joe Rackham 0+1, Connor MacKenzie 0+1.
Swindon Flames v Newbury Colts – Sunday 27th February 2005
After their opening success the previous weekend, the 2005 Peewee Flames experienced another first – losing !
Boosted by the addition of Tim Farthing to last weeks successful squad and up against a team that had only managed a narrow 4-1 victory in their first game (under their previous identity as Reading Rhinos), expectations were high.
The start to the first period justified that opinion with Danny Williams scoring on the rebound from a Jamie Morgan shot following a neat pass from Joe Rackham after only 9 seconds. Colts equalised at 1.21, but Flames went further ahead at 2.25 when Danny Williams again found himself in front of the net to put away an excellent reverse pass from behind the net by Jamie Morgan. Flames comfortably controlled the next few minutes play but were unable to convert their possession into further goals. Against the run of play, Colts equalised at 5.45 on a breakaway, goalie Adam Rose being beaten despite being in good position by a smart ‘deke’ to the forward’s backhand. This seemed to inspire the Flames who soon opened out a 5-2 lead with a hat trick goal for Danny Williams at 7.44, and further scores from Jamie Morgan (8.17) and Olly Thompson finding himself on the spot to capitalise on a pitch length run from Danny Williams at 12.44. Colts pulled another back at 14.03, but Flames regained their three goal cushion at 17.02 when Joe Rackham was on hand as the ball dropped onto the line following the Colts goalie making an excellent save from another goal-bound shot from Danny Williams. Experienced Defenceman Connor MacKenzie took a two minute elbowing penalty at 17.54 with Colts scored a minute later on the resulting powerplay, and the period ended with a fierce shortside drive from the right by Danny Williams giving Flames what must have seemed a comfortable 7-4 lead.
However, in the second period Flames began to lose their way. Young back-up goalie Zoe Rose again started in goal, but was unable to repeat her successes of the previous week and Colts had reduced the deficit to only one goal within 50 seconds of the restart. Adam Rose replaced his somewhat shell-shocked sister but a minute later Colts had levelled the game at 7-7. Flames retook the lead through Danny Williams at 22.34, who then extended the lead at 24.00 following an opportune break from the halfway line. But Colts had now begun to believe that they could take something from this game, and had tied the game up again at 9-9 by 27.49. Flames first line now began to tire, but with the scoreline being so tight had to dig deep to try and stay in the game. A six minute goalless period followed with resolute defending from both sides against tiring forwards, but it was the Colts who broke the deadlock to go ahead for the first time at 34.19. A two minute penalty on a Colts defender at 35.40 resulted in Danny Williams scoring on the powerplay from another intelligent pass from behind the net from Jamie Morgan to again tie the score at 10-10. Flames hopes were however finally dashed by what turned out to be the Colts winning goal at 37.53, and despite flinging everything the exhausted top line could muster at Newbury for a nailbiting last two minutes the Colts held on to win an engrossing and very entertaining match 11-10.
Managers Ian Morgan and Derek Thompson were obviously disappointed with the loss, but will have plenty of time to reflect on the lessons learned at upcoming training sessions before the next league game against the very strong Oxford Storm side on 20th March.
Scorers – Danny Williams 7+2, Jamie Morgan 1+2, Joe Rackham 1+1, Olly Thompson 1+0.
Swindon Flames v Sutton Vipers – Sunday 20th February 2005
Swindon Flames Peewee team opened their 2005 season yesterday (20th) against Sutton Vipers.
Fielding 10 players with a wide ability range from seasoned forwards to three new minnows ‘playing-up’ even though the team had not played together before, hopes were high.
Against the older and bigger Vipers players the first line held firm for the opening minutes with Adam Rose being the busier of the two Goalies. The deadlock was finally broken at 4.40 when the Vipers Goalie was unable to hold a shot from Danny Williams and Captain Jamie Morgan was on hand to net the rebound. The lead was doubled by D man Joe Rackham intercepting the ball and breaking from the half way line to score, and further increased by a smart breakaway by Olly Thompson at 10.45.
A neat wraparound by experienced forward Danny Williams and an opportunistic reaction to a rebounded slap shot by Jamie Morgan extended the lead to 5-0 before Vipers finally opened their account at 14.24. Danny Williams scored again at 17.28 from a neat pass from debutant defender Megan Salisbury and despite conceding a late second goal the Flames went into the period break enjoying a very satisfactory 6-2 lead.
Young Zoe Rose started in goal for the second period and kept a clean sheet thanks to solid defending from Connor MacKenzie, and new minnows Ryan Walters and Sam Nobbs until her older brother Adam could return at 25.35. During this period, Danny Williams had completed his hat-trick and scored his fourth with the goal of the game, skating the length of the hall and roofing the ball over the Goalie’s glove. Vipers pulled the score back to 8-3 at 28.55 after they had killed the only penalty in the game, and a further pair from Danny Williams either side of a couple of Viper goals, one an unlucky deflection and the other a neat finish to a clear breakaway, took the score to 10-5, before Olly Thompson completed the scoring from the front of the net at 38.56 after a neat pass from Jamie Morgan.
Managers Ian Morgan and Derek Thompson were delighted with the 11-5 win, that all their skaters had received plenty of playing time and acquitted themselves well, but above all had really enjoyed themselves.
The Peewees are next in action against Reading Rhinos this Sunday afternoon (27th) at 4.05.
Scorers – Danny Williams 6+1, Jamie Morgan 2+1, Olly Thompson 2+0, Joe Rackham 1+0, Megan Salisbury 0+1.
