![]() Swindon Flames - Junior Success in the Midlands
The
Swindon Junior Flames competed in a recent tournament in the Midlands. The team
consisted of:- Dan Oldland, Sean Barnett, Darren Wood, Phil Hodge, Laurie Hodge, Matt Demichelle and Steven Osman. A small
but enthusiastic group. The
other Teams entered in this Midlands tournament were – Group
A - Leasowe
Sharks Basildon
Allstars
Oxford Blues Group
B -
Stafford
Redditch
Swindon Flames The
tournament started in two groups of three with the two top teams in each
group moving thru to the semi-finals. The
flames started off against the Stafford team. They played superbly in
the first half leading 8-0, and then in the second half all started to
go wrong. We lost
goal after goal until there was only a single goal between the two
teams. With minutes to go we scored another goal which put us thru to
the semi finals. The
Sharks who were in the other group were playing great all day and were
easily the best team in their first two games. We had
to then play against Redditch. Everything that could go wrong did. Loss
of confidence, couldn’t score past the Redditch Net minder, we lost
10-5. The team
were rock bottom. In the
semi finals we were placed against the Sharks.
This was the match of the tournament.
There was only one goal between the two teams all the way thru. We
scored, they equalised, we scored and so on. The Flames were amazing.
Great effort, good team working and brilliant skill from both teams. In the
end we won 5-4, we were thru to the final against Redditch (again) By this
time all of the players were aching a lot, with sores blisters and
bruises. Watching the players walking around was like watching an old
John Wayne movie if you know what I mean. The Team
played their best hockey in this game, scoring early then again then
again leading with 5 minutes to go 4-0. This was the same team that
rolled over and lost 10-5. They
were stars. We started the day with four parents as supporters but ended
up with Oxford, Sharks and neutral supporters all cheering for the
Flames. The end
score was 5-2. This was a major triumph for a team of seven players
against the Sharks and Redditch 3+ lines. The club
should be really proud of this players, I know I am.
It shows that this games is 50% ability and 50% attitude /
confidence. P.S.
the day ended at 9.00pm in the Burger King with a Team
complaining of cramp and sores but with large smiles all over their
faces. Congratulations
to those players and the parents who supported us so well.
Kevin Osman (Manager).
