A new season, new venue and a new team

The new season got off to a good start with 2 convincing wins for the Junior Flames team on Sunday.  And it should be another successful season as this years Flames team formed the core of our European Youth team silver medallists in 2002.

Wheatley defended well to start with and it was 10mins before the younger line scored the first 2 goals. But Flames teams are traditionally slow to start. From then on the Flames totally dominated the game and goal followed goal. The passing was superb, with occasional 3 or 4 touch passes before the ball hit the back of the Wheatley net. This was a good demonstration of how to move the ball quickly from one end to the other and I wish we had videoed the game. The final score was 23 - 1 to Swindon and everyone made the score sheet - except Dan.

The Reading game was more competitive and a couple of crazy goals left us trailing 2 - 0 in the first 3 minutes. However, we soon bounced back - and they bounced off some of our players. A good game of hockey followed. The final score was 12 - 4 to Swindon.

As team manager on Sunday (Kevin was unfortunately ill) this was a stress free start to the season. We have quality players, complete inter-changeability of the lines and a good supporters club. What more could a manager want? And just to emphasise the quality of the teamwork and play; 50% of the goals were credited with assists!  And many of the other goals were slap shots. If we don't go to the Nationals - I will be surprised.
