![]() Swindon Flames - Junior Nationals (8-10 Nov 2002) The Junior Flames results in the recent National Championships in Gloucester were disappointing. Starting
in a strong group, the first two games were played at speed and,
although we competed well, we lost 6-5 to London Warriors and 4-2 to the
Hornets who eventually finished runners up.
We had a poor third game and failed to do ourselves justice
against the Adur Hitmen, losing 4-2.
This left us with a game against our old rivals the N A Knights.
Once again we gave away too many penalties and could not maintain
possession, the Knights running out with a deserved 6-4 win. Sunday’s
first game was at 9.00 am and we are not noted for our early starts.
In the absence of our normal keeper, Chris Moore stepped up to
play superbly in goal, but we lost in an ill-tempered game 6-3 against
the Chequers.
The
tournament will be remembered, however, for the inspired goal keeping of
Owen Satchell who volunteered to go in goal for our last game.
Gloving a ball and throwing it down to the defence with a casual
flick, he showed that sometimes there is a fine line between novice and
experienced goal keeping.
This game was good to watch, with accurate passing and team play.
We demonstrated we had not forgotten how to play at National
standard and took the lead immediately.
The pace of the game was slower than the previous games, but
growing in confidence and with Owen relaxed in goal, we went on to win
6-4. Our top scorer for the tournament, with 7 goals and 2 assists, was Tom who had some good shots from the centre line. The
total penalty points over 6 games was a disappointing 59 mins. This
meant that we played short-handed for nearly a third of the time and
were constantly chasing the ball.
Thanks to everyone for a good final game and keep practicing with
that catcher Owen. The tournament winners were Borehamwood. Full Competition Results:
