GB Success for Flames Captain

Swindon Flames captain Shaun Davies returned from the European U18s Inline Skater Hockey Championships with a Bronze medal with team Great Britain.

The Championships were held in Lugano, Switzerland, over the weekend of 8th & 9th September. The countries which made this years finals weekend were: Austria, Denmark, Israel, Germany, Great Britain, Netherlands and Denmark.

Team GB started the weekend off with an impressive 9-0 win over Israel. This was followed by a 4-2 loss to the Netherlands. Team GB then rounded off the Saturday with wins over Austria (8-0) and Denmark (4-3).

Sunday saw team GB face last years champions Germany, losing a close fought game 5-3. To finish the group stages, GB lost to Switzerland 8-2.

Having qualified in 4th place, Team GB faced the reigning champions Germany in the semi final. A great team performance ensured a close fought semi final, however, the Germans strength in depth eventually told, and several late goals saw Team GB lose 6-2.

This set up a Bronze medal clash with Netherlands. Despite the earlier reverse against the Netherlands, Team GB blazed to an impressive 5-1 win, with Shaun Davies scoring the opening goal.

The tournament was won by Germany, who beat Switzerland 12-11 in one of the best finals ever seen.

Shaun Davies said “This has been a great tournament of the highest standard. The scores do not reflect how close each game actually was. I am really proud to have been selected to represent Great Britain, and I am delighted to have come away with the bronze medal.”
