FLAMES RECEIVE BOOST FROM SWINDON BOROUGH COUNCIL
Swindon Skater Hockey Club has been given a boost after receiving an award from the Swindon Borough Council’s “Grassroots Grants Fund”. The fund has been set up by the council to support community-based activities and help local groups develop as organisations. The club have used the funds to help purchase a complete set of new team shirts in an effort to encourage participation and promote access to the game by lessening the cost burden to people entering the sport for the first time. Speaking on behalf of The Flames, Les Satchell, the club’s Chairman, said “We are a small, friendly, community based club run entirely by volunteers on a not-for- profit basis and we’d like to thank Swindon Council for awarding us this grant which will be invaluable in helping our ongoing development programme.” Les went on to say “Despite the fact that the playing costs for skater hockey are considerably less than those associated with ice hockey, the costs of taking up the sport are similar in that, with the exception of the skates themselves, the equipment required is identical. In the past the club has had very few “club” shirts, with individual players having to buy their own. Thanks to Swindon Borough Council and this grant we have been able to purchase new shirts for the use of the club’s members, particularly the youngsters taking up the sport for the first time, and we hope that by reducing the initial costs this will encourage more young people to try out our sport”. With the Junior Flames flying the flag for Great Britain at this year’s European Cup, being held in Essen, Germany, and in light of recent successes and the expansion of the club through the formation of both the Senior side and the Peewee Reds, there has never been a better time to become involved with The Flames and Swindon Skater Hockey Club would warmly welcome all and any support from local businesses and/or organisations. Should you wish to help The Flames, one of Swindon’s best known amateur sports clubs, through any form of sponsorship please contact John Bayliss at jc.bayliss@hotmail.co.uk to discuss how an association with the club could be of mutual benefit.
