Swindon Flames Beginners Day A Great Success

Swindon Skater Hockey Club recently held a beginners day (210707) in order to promote the sport of inline skater hockey to a new generation of children and to give the club’s beginners an opportunity to play in competitive games.

The day, organised by the club and held at the Croft Recreation Centre on Saturday 21st July, was for most of the children taking part, their first foray into competitive hockey and an opportunity for them to show off the skills that they have developed since their first faltering steps on inline skates.

As a result of the Flames’ successful development programme the club was able to field 3 sides, named for the day as Inferno, Blaze and Wildfire who were joined by a beginners team from Surrey, Ash Avalanche.

Although the games were arranged on a friendly basis and the emphasis was on fun there was no doubting the competitive spirit of all the teams who provide a full day of exciting, end to end hockey to a gallery of spectators packed with proud mums and dads.

The eventual winners of the tournament were Swindon Flames Blaze who overcame a determined Ash Avalanche in a thrilling 3-2 final. The winning team lifted a trophy whilst medals and certificates were awarded to all the children who took part.

John Devine, beginners coach for the Swindon Flames said “ The day was a fantastic success and it was great to see the beginners playing in their first games and using this opportunity to put into practice the skills that they’ve learned in our beginners sessions. Hopefully this will be the first of many such events.”
